Candid or Posed? Why the Best Family Photoshoots Need Both.

As an Abu Dhabi family photographer, I’m a huge fan of candid, natural family photography.

The most meaningful family photos happen when everyone forgets about the camera. Children play, parents laugh together, and real moments unfold naturally. That’s what lifestyle family photography is all about.

Children shouldn’t be expected to pose for an hour. They should be free to run, explore, cuddle, and simply be themselves. And let’s be honest—most dads aren’t big fans of posing either.

But after photographing hundreds of family photoshoots in Abu Dhabi, I’ve noticed something interesting.

Even families who tell me, “We only want candid photos,” almost always ask at the end:

“Do you have a few where everyone is looking at the camera?”

And they’re right.

Those timeless portraits are often the ones you’ll print for your home, frame on the wall, or send to grandparents.

That’s why I believe the perfect family photography session is all about balance.

About 85% of every gallery is filled with genuine moments—playing, walking, talking, laughing, cuddling, and simply enjoying time together.

The remaining 15% are carefully guided family portraits where everyone is together, looking at the camera.

The combination of candid storytelling and classic portraits creates a gallery that feels authentic today—and becomes even more valuable years from now.
